Ready was delighted to be able to provide the special needs unit at Surbiton Nursery with the soft play equipment which allow the children to play in safety. The children, all of whom are three or four years old and mainly have social communication difficulties connected with Autism now have play time which is not only safe and educational but is loads of fun!
Danielle can now take part thanks to Wimbledon Golf Club!
Danielle who is 11 years old suffers from Spastic Diplegia Cerebal Palsy, her PE teacher at her school wrote to us
I spoke to Danielle when she first started here and asked her how she coped with P.E. and Dance at her primary school. She told me that she loved all sports but found it very difficult to take part as she became tired because her wheelchair was big and bulky and the frame of her chair got in the way especially when playing Hockey, her favourite game. This got me thinking of the possibility of a sports wheelchair and I started asking around where to get one. I felt that with the government feeling so strongly about equal opportunities, social inclusion and every individuals’ right to access the national curriculum, it was only a matter of time before we would get a chair for Danielle. I spoke to Social Services and the education department who thought it was a great idea but not something with which they could help. It was now down to Danielle’s parents but at a cost of £1500 this was not a viable option in the short term although they are determined to get her one eventually but she needs it now. A sports wheel chair would mean that Danielle could participate in all her P.E. and Dance lessons for the next five years. It would give her the opportunity to try a lot of different activities and to keep herself fit. It may lead on to competitive sport or joining a club outside school, or it may not. The point is at the moment she doesn’t have the opportunity like any 11 year old, all she wants to do is join in and have fun with her friends. If READY could help provide Danielle with this Wheelchair it would make a young girl and her old P.E, teacher very happy.
